Why TikTok is my Favourite Social Platform

For someone who has been on the internet for as long as I have (trust me, it’s been a while…) it’s not unusual for me to be hyped over a social media platform. I’ve been a serial tweeter, Instagram scroller and now, a TikTok obsessive, but I am not excited about TikTok because it’s the ‘current’ social media platform or the place to be. It’s more than that.

Back in 2020, - when we all had more free time than we would have liked - I decided to bite the bullet and sign up to TikTok, it’s popularity was in full swing by this stage, so I was curious to see what it was all about.

Around February or March, I uploaded my first video and from the first push of the ‘post’ button, I was hooked. My first post was clips from the Jonas Brothers’ ‘Happiness Begins’ tour, it made me smile to look over the memories, and in terms of views & likes, it did pretty well, but that wasn’t my sole focus.

The reason why I was hooked on TikTok, was the sense of community there, and the space for creativity. It reminds me so much of the earlier social media days, I don’t know if you remember like I do (or maybe you do!) but social media was simply used for creative reasons, and although I know there was definitely trolling going on towards the more popular content creators - which still wasn’t fair - it wasn’t a rife as it is today, and TikTok sort of brings me back to that.

Don’t get me wrong, there is never a social media platform without it’s problems, you can be sure there are TikTok stars receiving some hate within their comments, but right now, it seems to be the more positive social space out there.

TikTok is known for its quick content, most of us that upload to TikTok, do so by shooting the video on our phones. Some of the best, and even viral TikToks weren’t 4K quality and they don’t have to be. You could be dressed up as much as you want, or chilling in your loungewear without even a scrap of makeup on and nobody will care. If the TikTok is fun or creative, it will be viewed.

It really brings me back to a time where creators were uploading videos to YouTube from their webcams (I know, I sound super old here) and they had value because they were funny, or interesting. Today’s webcam is the smartphone, and YouTube is now TikTok, in my opinion. That is why I enjoy it so much.

When I upload to TikTok, it’s just fun, there’s no expectations as such, if I want to join in the latest dance trend, post a makeup haul or just something silly to entertain myself, I can. I hope it remains that way for some time to come.

If you’d like to give me a follow over there, please do! I will follow back because I love connecting with fellow Tiktokers.

    Until next time,

    Denise. X
